Bermuda, circa May, 1955

The Admiral took us to sea for a frantic day in which he and his staff thought up all the calamities possible; for in one day we took charge of a mutinous ship (almost too realistically) and in addition had to tow her off a “reef” stern first, and if that wasn’t enough, we had to weigh the cable by hand.  Everything happens at sea.

Don't recall the name of the other ship though.

I'm sure that one of the crew had the surname Beard and therefore, of course, was called Scurze. But which one?

FRANK NUNN'S PHOTOS

HIGH & DRY IN SAN DIEGO

This photo of the Main Circulator repair team that undertook the repairs when we dry docked in San Diego after we hit the bottom coming out of Bermuda on our ‘Summer Cruise’ up the West Coast of America.

We knocked off the zinc sacrificial pieces fitted to the inlet of the mn. circ.. They were sucked into the circ. and really damaged the blades. I was in the repair team for the temporary repair but managed to wriggle out of the main repair when docked in San Diego.

BILL SHEWARD'S PHOTOS

I'm gradually sorting through my late Dad's photos of his time in the RN and came across this, which might be of interest. Christmas day 1954 in 18 Mess.

My Dad, Bill Sheward (seated bottom left in this photo with what looks to be a cigar) served on the Superb from Nov' 53 to Jan '56, leaving as an EA 4 (PO). It was his first ship and he spoke very fondly of her and the great places he visited during the 54/55 cruise.

Dad passed away in October of last year. As I wade through his photo collection I'll post more.

PHIL GRIMSON'S PHOTOS

Thanks to Shipmate Phil Grimson for sharing these photos of his cruise.

Here are a few pics. from my album..

Not all of those above are self explanatory so I ought to add a description here and there:

The first Chilean Navy post was one taken by their own photographer and given to me by Hannibal de la Fuentes the chief honcho of the Chilean Navy Base. I was the first to 'break the ice' when we arrived because although we had a couple of officers with us nobody seemed to know what to do and everybody  was standing around like lemons.

Afterwards he showed me all over the base and we shared a few grogs together. Although neither of us could speak each other's language except for a few words of Spanish I had picked up from my brother-in-law we got on pretty well together. Hannibal is the officer in the white suit on the extreme right of the next Chilean Navy Base picture next to me.

The other matelot two seats away is Philip Farr who saw this posted on my FB site a couple of years ago and contacted me.

The picture of Me, Wiggy and Mike was taken in Bermuda and Wiggy is Wiggy Bennett (W) and Mike is -'hold onto your hat!'- Michael Carol Richard Sidney Smith! a Stores Assistant in my team.

Hammocks slung, Out pipes,
